I think that Beowulf is a great story. I really liked it because I recently seen the movie so I can compare and contrast. The movie is a little different at the end but it starts of in the same way but as the story goes on it gets different. The story good and had a lot of interesting details. I like how Beowulf was really brave and how some people didn’t believe that he was going to be able to kill Grendal and his mother but he proved them wrong.
The part that showed me that Beowulf was really a hero is when he first came to… he announced himself like he knew he was capable of killing the monster. When Beowulf first seen Grendal as he was killing the Danes, eating them and ripping their bodies apart he did not hesitate and before he made any movements he sat back and watched how Grendal managed to continue his killing spree. When Grendal started to head towards Beowulf to kill him, Beowulf surprised him by grasping his arm when he tried to pick him up and when he did that Grendal realized that Beowulf was not just an everyday ordinary person. After that Grendal felt how strong Beowulf was he got scared and knew that Beowulf could probably defeat him.
After Beowulf killed Grendal I was like he must be a very good and strong person because all of the other Danes couldn’t compare with Grendal. Even of they all teamed up against him and jumped him they couldn’t kill this monster. Not even after Grendal continued to kill their people for Twelve Years. I felt sorry for the Danes because these events got so serious that they just gave up all hope and stopped believing that god was by their side and that it was no reason to pray anymore.
The climax part that I enjoyed the most is when Beowulf went to visit Grendal’s mother. That was my favorite part because when Beowulf first went to her home she thought that it was no way she could possibly get killed. I thought that she was going to kill him when he had the first sword and stroke at her and she didn’t die. After he got mad and seen the sword that was made by very powerful people I knew that it was going to be over. If you think about it it really makes sense, a strong warrior gets a hold of a powerful sword you know it’s going to be a wrap.
I think that “Beowulf” is an illustration of what the Anglo-Saxon’s believed because the Anglo-Saxon’s believed that anyone who was above normal was a warrior. The Anglo-Saxon’s strongly believed in warriors. Anyone who was completely powerful was a warrior to the Saxon’s. In “Beowulf” he had to prove himself to be a Warrior by defeating monsters and being a hero and that proved that he was very powerful and above normal humans. “Beowulf grasped his arm and sat up. The criminal knew he had
not met in this middle-earth another with such a grip.” This proves that Beowulf is incredibly strong.
The Beowulf is also an illustration of the Anglo-Saxon’s because they believed in god. Even though they believed in god they still had to fight and kill people. They also stuck together and stood up for each other. They had a lot of the same believes and had something’s in common. Though he is famous for strength, he knows no weapons to cut a shield. If he chooses to forego a sword, if he dares seek me without weapon, then we two shall fight without and wise God, that king, shall choose who shall win glory.” This proves that Beowulf was not worried about fighting Grendal because he put it all in god’s hands. He said that of god wants him to win then it will happen so he just put his faith in god.
I think that Beowulf is like a Superman story because Superman always comes and saves someone when they are crying out for help. Supermen always come to the rescue when someone really needs him. Everyone puts all of their faith into them. They depend on them with their lives, they are like god’s little son’s. They are also alike because they were both the strongest people in their world. Beowulf had fulfilled his promise to the Danes and all the distress they had endured, all the trouble and sorrow, had reached an end.
“Then the terrible dragon a third time rushed, hot and battle-grim. He bit Beowulf's neck with sharp tusks—Beowulf was wet with life's blood; blood gushed in waves.” This is a short explanation to how Beowulf died. He could no longer fight because he was old and restless. “I thank the Wonder-King, the Ruler of All, that I could win this for my people before my death-day. I have traded my old life for the people's needs. I cannot remain.Bid my warriors raise a splendid mound on the shore-cliffs after my funeral fire that a remembrance shall tower high on Hronesness. Sea-farers shall afterward call it Beowulf's Mound when they pilot ships far over the ocean's mist”. By this quote I know that Beowulf was happy with the life he lived. I also know that he was glad that he died the was that he did. He died trying to save people and fight for other people to live peaceful. I think that Beowulf died as a brave warrior who was only trying to please the world and make sure that everyone was happy.
