Dark Romanticism

I think that Nathaniel Hawthorne is a lot different from the Transcendentalism because he had a lot to do with the government because his father was a judge and he believed in government. I also know that he is not Transcendentalism because when he said that he didn’t like that his father and other judges sentenced people to death because a person said that another person is a witch, he should have made his self heard. Transcendentalism’s would express their self and stand up for what they believed in. He should have said something to the government because innocent people were getting their lives taken because no one spoke up.

Herman Melville was against Transcendentalism because he seen the experience of people eating other people (cannibals). There fore he knew that all people were nor good or pure. He also knew that people’s voices were not the voice of god because cannibals believed that this was the right thing to do. The book Moby Dick was a good example of why they didn’t think all people are good and pure. I say that because a man was willing to sacrifice losing his ship that he created himself and was willing to sacrifice the lives of other innocent people just to kill the whale that ate his leg. That is not an example of a good and pure person.

Edgar Allen Poe was against Dark Romanticism because he doesn’t believe that everyone is good and pure just as well as the other two people. He doesn’t believe that all people are good and pure because his father was not good and pure because his father disowned him.

In a way I think I would be more Transcendentalism because I believe in speaking up and being heard. The only thing that I don’t believe about Transcendentalism is that when they say that all people are good and pure. I don’t believe that all people are good and pure because people go out and kill other people for no reason. Also I don’t think that because people put bombs in airplanes and bomb other countries just because they won’t to start wars and commotion. I would also be Transcendentalism because in a lot of situations I don’t agree with the government and dislike some of the solutions they have for problems.

The story that I read is "Hop Frog" the story is o.k. I think that the king is not responsible enough to be a king because he jokes around too much. Every thing that he does has to have a laugh involved. He kind of reminds me of a class clown because he always wants to be the one to make other people laugh. Even if he is mean to people and hurt their feelings just to hear a little Ha Ha from someone. He thinks that because he has power that it doesn’t matter what he do to other people who aren’t as lucky as he is.
Hop frog is a good example of Dark Romanticsm because the dwarf wanted to get even whith the knig for hitting his friend and making him drink wine so he dressed him as a ape for the party and ended up burning the king up. Transcendentalism would have tried to help the king by telling him the he needs to change and be good instead of picking on everyone and playing jokes. The dwarf wanted revenge and a Transcendentalism would have left it like it was.

This story shows that it is Dark Romanticism. I say that because Dark Romanticism thinks that not everyone is good and pure. When the king struck a girl before throwing wine in her face it showed that he was not good or pure. This story is a lot more Dark Romanticism than Transcendentalism.

I liked the poem "The Raven" because it was kind of freaky and I like scary and mystery poems. It is a really creepy because the raven came to a man to tell him something and send messages. The man knew that by the raven sticking around it was trying to tell him something. He even asked the raven a lot of questions including what are you here for. The only thing the raven would continue to say is nevermore. While all of this was going on his second wife died.

Even though his second wife died the raven continued to stay around the man and he never once left the area. I believe that the raven meant that the man would never be happy again or maybe it was a sign of death. Whatever the raven was there for meant that the man was going to be unhappy because the raven didn’t appear until his wife started dying. I think that the man lost his mind after he asked the raven would he ever be happy again and the raven said nevermore.
This story is not Transcendentalism because it’s not saying that people’s thoughts and intuitions are the voice of good. For an example the raven that appeared in his eye was just in his mind and head. I don’t even think that the raven was real. I think that it was all in his head, and that his mind was playing tricks on him. I think that man knew that he was never going to be happy again because he has been through so many things.
"Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortals ever dared to dream before; But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token,And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, "Lenore?"This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, "Lenore!"--Merely this and nothing more." This is a good example of Dark Romanticsm because it shows that he is thinking evil things and it proves that everyone does not think about all good things and that everyones thoughts and intuitions are the voice of god.

Everything that was happening in his life was going wrong. After his wife died he was never happy again. I think that’s what the raven was there for because he was never going to have a life again. He had no one to care for him or nothing to live his life for because he was probably just going to be old and lonely. Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,"Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortals ever dared to dream before; But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token,And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, "Lenore?"This I whispered and an echo murmured back the word, "Lenore!"--Merely this and nothing more. The Transcendentalisms would disagree with this because they think that what every one thinks and says is what god wants you to. They think that it is the voice of god and this don’t sound like its something that god would think or say.

In Boston on May 1827, Poe went served in The Untied States Army as a private using the name Edgar A. Perry. After two years of service after he had got promoted to the rank of Sergeant major, he secured with Mr. Allen’s aid. I think that his stories and poems has a lot to do with his life because in his autobiography that I read said that he started loosing his mind after his wife died like the story about "The Raven". His life autobiography said that after his wife died alcohol became a big habit to him, and when he had even a sip of it his personality would change a lot. It is almost like how the man’s life fell apart in "The Raven" after his wife died.

Transcendentalism

"Nature". I liked this script because for you to see where this person is coming from you have to use your imagination to really understand what they are saying.. I think that people don’t really look at nature like they are supposed to but I don’t think that you have to become one with nature to go to heaven. I also don’t think that you will become a part of god through nature. This is saying that in order to be with god and get his faith you have to be one with nature first. They is also saying that in order to live a better life and become one with yourself and god that you have to learn how to appreciate nature and all of its goodness.

"In the woods too, a man casts off his years, as the snake his slough, and at what period soever of life, is always a child. In the woods, is perpetual youth." That is an example of Transcendentalism because it is saying that in nature you kind of change into a kid because you discover things that look and feel a lot different. Nature makes you feel like your in heaven because there you can think and not have any interruptions. It is saying that you act as if you were a child because things are more precious to you as if it amazes you like a child would be amazed at a first time at a zoo.

"Self Reliance." I really like this script because it is telling you that you should be yourself no matter what other people think about you. It is saying that you should not want to be like someone else or change or style, image, or personality to try to be like another person. It is saying that god gave you your own style and beliefs for a reason and that you should be happy the way god made you and that you shouldn’t try to change because that is going against god because he made you to be yourself. It is also saying that you shouldn’t be scared to voice your opinions and beliefs just because you’re scared of what somebody might think.

"The eye was placed where one ray should fall, that it might testify of that particular ray. We but half express ourselves, and are ashamed of that divine idea which each of us represents. It may be safely trusted as a Proportionate and of good issues, so it be faithful imparted, but God will not have his work made manifest by cowards." That is saying that no human should be scared of another human. God doesn’t want you to bite your tongue and be a coward. That God wants to fight for what you believe in if you really believe it, and not to change your words and say differently from what you believe because of the people that you are around.

I like that thought because im tired of people backing down from what they believe all of their lives just so they can fit in with other people. I used to change my ways and actions to try to fit in and be popular but when I became myself I gained more respect. I gained more respect because instead of being unhappy and not heard I am now heard and happy because I say what I want instead of holding it in and wishing. It feels a lot better than having to become apart of something that you don’t want to be in because you care about what other people think.

"Resistance to Civil Government" I really don’t know what to think about this script. He is saying that he is not happy with the government. He doesn’t think that the government is doing their job and that they are thinking about their selves only and not about other people in the world.

"The American government is necessary because the people must have some complicated machinery or other, and hear its din, to satisfy that idea of government which they have However, the only times when government has been useful has been when it has stood aside." He is saying that the government is not doing what they are supposed to do to help the community. They are also saying that the government could be better by responding in a positive way about their complaints about it.

If I were Susan in this situation I would just suck it up and go to a near by school. When you think about it going to school far away is not worth loosing someone you love. Its not like he is asking her to choose from going to school or being with him. She should either hold off the wedding and just get engaged or go to school somewhere close to home. He may feel as if she just will forget about him when she goes off hundreds of miles from home.

This is an example of Transcendentalism because David is changing his life from going to school to working in a store. Susan is doing the same thing witch is going to school. David is changing his everyday life and discovering something new. This is also Transcendentalism because they had plans to get married but now she just want to up and go hundreds of miles away so she just changes their life at the last minute.

American Romanticism

My opinion about Rip Van Winkle is that he is to nice and that he cares about how other people look at him other than how he look at himself. He should be ashamed of himself for helping other people with their problems but not helping his own family with their struggles. He is a good man but he should focus more on his family’s household and make sure that his kids are in control and living good before he try to fix the whole towns problems. He would be a very good man if he spent the time that he did fixing his life sometimes other than responding to every body else’s needs and wants.

Rip Van Winkle is not a bad person but he would have been a better man if he showed his family that he cared about them more than he show. He should have been a man and did as his wife wanted him to and it would have been helpful to hear her out when she nags sometimes. He should have also been a man and confessed that he didn’t like his wife very much. I think that he set a negative example for his son and basically showed him that he was a suck-up. Now I see why people say "you don’t know what you have until it’s gone", this story kind of set an example for that phrase.

If I were Rip Van Winkle I would be a great person in my family’s eye’s before I would in my neighbor’s eyes. If I knew that my household was going down the drain and the my crops weren’t growing because I didn’t work in it I would be ashamed to show my face to anyone. That would make my family feel as if no one cared if they were to live or die, and that theirs no purpose to live because no one will notice if they were still on the earth.
The first thing I found Romantic about this story is when Rip went to sleep for twenty years after he drunk from the flagon. I mean really, you would have to use your imaginary to see that happening. There is no way possible that a person could sleep for twenty years straight. It wasn’t realistic but it was very interesting. The second thing that I found Romantic about this story is that when he slept for twenty years no one just happened to run across him. I can’t believe that no one didn’t see some one laying on the ground and not to saying anything, some body had to run across him if it’s been twenty years.

I think that the poem is trying to explain and relate to nature. The poem is also trying to relate to humans. The poem is saying that people shouldn’t be scared of god or dying. Just because you die doesn’t mean that it’s the end of your life and that you’re going to suffer. Everyone has to die so why be scared of it, no one is going to be here forever. I think that it is relating nature to death by saying that after you die you will live another life as something else like a plant, animal, or something different. Maybe being dead is better than living, life is painful and full of worries, struggles, and problems, maybe death is calm and leads to happiness. It is also trying to say that nature can talk to you and that you should turn to nature when thinking about dying because nature is like the dead people, they are living in peace. I find it Romantic when it says talk to nature, I would have to use my imagination a lot to do that.

I think the poem is about someone using his imaginary to be successful at work. When you are imagining things it makes you think differently about your environment and it helps you complete the day without a lot of struggles. It also makes you interesting in doing whatever you do. The whole story relates to Romantic. I know for a fact that imagining helps you through out the day because I do it at school a lot and it keeps me focus and woke and it helps me see things more clearly.

A visual like this is Romanticism because it has a picture of nature which Romanticism talks about and has a lot to do with. It reminds me of a happy and peaceful place. It also is Romanticism I think because it reminds me of death. What I mean by that is that it looks like a place that a dead person would want to be so they can rest in peace. It is a very calming place and the most precious place to be around.
